Termite
Pre-Construction

It's often overlooked that concrete slabs can be vulnerable to moisture and termite infestations if not properly protected.

At The Bug Specialist, we provide tailored solutions for slab protection, including physical barriers, reticulation systems, and slab sprays, to ensure the safety of your property.

Are you contemplating a building project or considering an extension to your existing structure?

If so, it’s crucial to incorporate a proactive pest management strategy right from the outset.

The process of pre-construction pest control, particularly against termites, involves the application of a termite barrier to the soil. This is done after the soil has been leveled and before the concrete is poured. This strategic measure is designed to deter termites present in the soil from gnawing their way into the building’s foundation, thereby offering a robust line of defense against these destructive pests.

How it works:

The installation of a pre-construction termite barrier is a vital measure in protecting a building from the potential threat of termite infestations. This process is multi-staged, ensuring comprehensive protection against these damaging pests.

The initial step takes place before the pouring of the concrete slab. In this phase, collars for pipe penetration are installed. These collars serve as protective shields around pipes and utility openings in the foundation, effectively blocking termites from accessing these susceptible points. This preliminary action is crucial in establishing a strong base for the subsequent installation of the termite barrier.

Following the completion of the slab pour and the external drainage work, our termite barrier, made in Australia, is installed on the slab. This barrier is a highly effective triple-layer sheet barrier that utilizes a blend of physical and chemical properties to repel termites into an inspection zone.

Upon successful installation of the termite barrier, the property owner or builder will receive a certification of installation from the team. This certification acts as proof that the termite barrier has been properly installed and complies with the standards required for termite prevention under Australian Standards.

Once the certification is obtained, the property owner can submit it to the local council as part of the necessary documentation to receive the final occupation certificate. This final occupation certificate indicates that the building adheres to all relevant regulations and is legally fit for occupation. It also offers reassurance to the occupants, knowing that their property is protected against the potentially catastrophic effects of termite infestations.

Chemical Termite Treatment:

There are two primary types of chemical sprays that can be used to eliminate termites. The first type is a repellent, which creates a protective zone around the perimeter and under concrete slabs to prevent termites from entering a building. The second type targets the central nervous system of termites, disrupting their ability to reproduce.

This non-repellent chemical is taken back to the nest by the termites, infecting others and beginning the elimination process. We recommend regular termite inspections to ensure that these chemical barriers remain effective, and we may need to reapply to maintain ongoing protection. At the Bug Specialist, we use environmentally friendly termite treatments that comply with Australian Standards. This applies for the following:

New Homes & Buildings:

To protect new buildings from termite invasion, we offer an integrated approach that includes a chemically treated layer of soil around the perimeter, subfloor and underslab, as well as physical barriers for plumbing penetration pipes and concrete slabs. Our termiticide can be applied to the soil under the slab and around the footings, construction joints, pipes, conduits, and other structures of the house or building to create a horizontal barrier. This solution is highly effective and long-lasting.
